Green hydrogen as the key to the energy transition

Sustainable green hydrogen for Europe’s industry

Green hydrogen plays a crucial role in achieving Europe’s climate goals and is one of the key pillars of VERBUND’s strategy.

For VERBUND, green hydrogen is a logical extension of the value chain, positioning us as a holistic decarbonisation partner for our customers, offering both green electricity and green hydrogen.

VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH was founded with the aim of meeting the growing demand for competitive green hydrogen to secure Europe’s industrial base .

Versatile application potential for green hydrogen with us as a partner

  • Processing into basic chemicals for direct use in industry (e.g. steel, chemistry or fertiliser)
  • Possibility of being used as fuel in the transport sector, especially in the heavy haul sector
  • Storage and regeneration of volatile wind and solar power as well as provision of grid services

VERBUND is driving decarbonisation forward with green hydrogen

To achieve our ambitious climate targets and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, we are pushing the production, transport, and use of green hydrogen. Together with partners from numerous industrial sectors, we are implementing local projects and promoting the establishment of a green hydrogen economy via import routes. We address the entire value chain – from hydrogen production, to transport, to use in our customers’ processes.

Building a green hydrogen economy via import routes

Only by developing diversified hydrogen import routes will it be possible to meet the rapidly growing demand for green hydrogen at the competitive prices needed to secure Europe’s industrial base. Dependence on fossil fuels is simultaneously being significantly reduced. We are therefore expanding our value chain to include international production, transport, and marketing of green hydrogen. Here too international partnerships and networks are crucial to success.

Expansion of hydrogen production

The use of green hydrogen is particularly in demand in those sectors where the possibilities for electrification are limited. That is why we are developing green hydrogen projects together with consumers from hard-to-abate sectors such as steel and (petro-)chemicals, as well as the mobility sector. With the know-how of an integrated energy company, our experts draw on their solid experience in power plant construction and electricity trading to expand VERBUND’s portfolio to include green hydrogen. Production on our customers’ sites ensures immediate and reliable availability of green hydrogen.

“Green hydrogen is the solution for a sustainable, future-proof energy system. We are working on our own generation local production and on the development of import corridors to supply our customers with green hydrogen.”

Franz Helm Managing Director of VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH

Achieving climate neutrality is a joint effort. Which is why VERBUND is represented in various networks and associations and is actively involved in developing an international hydrogen economy:
